Courses and Workshops

(See course locations.) I lead workshop-style courses and workshops for small groups of professional researchers writing for publication, and for research supervisors looking for a clear and effective way to mentor the writing of others. These are most commonly 10, 3-hour sessions, with follow-up to article acceptance, but single workshops and short courses can be arranged.

Articles written during the 10-session life science course have been published in many journals, including (but not limited to): Amyloid, The Journal of Protein Folding Disorders , Animal Biotechnology, Animal Feed Science and Technology,  Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology,   Aquaculture Research,  Avian Diseases,  British Poultry Science,  Cryobiology,  Cytogenetics and Cell Genetics,  Domestic Animal Endocrinology,  Equine Veterinary Journal,  European Journal of Immunology,  Histology and Histopathology: Cellular and Molecular Biology,  Journal of  Virology,   Journal of Animal Science, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Journal of Dairy Research, Journal of Geophysical Research,  Journal of Immunology, Journal of Nematology, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Journal of Veterinary Medicine, Livestock Production Science,  Mammalian Genome,  Meat Science,  Molecular Reproduction and Development, Physiology and Behavior,   Preventive Veterinary Medicine,  Reproduction,  Research in Veterinary Science, TeleMetronics BioMetry,  Theriogenology, Tijdschrift voor Diergeneeskunde,  Toxicology Letters,  Vaccine,  Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology,  Veterinary Parasitology,  Veterinary Research and  the World’s Poultry Science Journal, among others. Some participants have also used the course to prepare successful funding proposals. (If you took the course and I have omitted your publication, did you remember to send me an offprint? Please do.)

Technical Writing and Editing (usually 10 sessions)

Papers written during this course have been produced for a number of companies, including (but not limited to) ABB, Akzo-Nobel, Delft University of Technology, Océ, Philips, Schlumberger, Shell, Siemens, TNO and the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, and/or have been published in journals, formed portions of PhD dissertations or been presented at international conferences. Since a number of these papers have been confidential, I collected no offprints.

Writing for Academic Publication in the Social Sciences (negotiable)

Papers written during this course have been published in journals or presented at international conferences or formed portions of PhD dissertations. My personal experience with social science editing includes many years with a social science journal (Sage, Blackwell), working with several other journals and editing numerous books and articles for (or for publication by) many institutions and publishers, including: Cambridge University, Edward Vermeer Foundation, Institute of Social Studies, Information Design Journal (John Benjamins), Lynne Reiner Books, Macmillan, Oxford University Press, Royal Institute of the Tropics, Shaker Press, St. Martin’s Press, John Wiley & Sons and Zed Books.

Courses are planned in Europe and Africa (see course locations), but other travel is possible and a new venue can be arranged. Contact me for details.

Editing

Editing services are available for academic books and articles, either to academic publishers or to individuals.  When you ask for details, please be certain that the subject line in your email is clear, to distinguish your message from spam.

Handbooks

Three handbooks based on the courses are planned. The first is now in press. I apologise for the delay.
